Challenge
The client wanted something special to commemorate DC's historic bid to bring two stages of the Giro d'Italia to Washington, DC. During the process group was presented with two fixed gear track bikes by Ernesto Colnago which presented a unique canvas upon which to draw.
Solution
We suggested that the bikes be custom painted to match the brand identity of the ONCE campaign, which is DC's identity during the bid process. Using the three stripes of both flags and a ribbon motif, created two distinct areas of the bike to represent each country. Flags on the seat tube completed the connection. We then worked with a custom bike painting shop, AirGlow, in Atlanta, Georgia and had a custom head tube badge made by Jen over at xxx creations in xxx, sss. The most recent wearer of the Maglia Rossa, the Giro's winning jersey, Christian Vande Velde also signed the bike with best wishes. Photos: Paul Morse
Impact
The bike was in the Colnago booth at the 2010 Interbike show in Las Vegas and was subsequently auctioned at the National Italian American Foundation's Annual Black-tie Gala.
Client Quote
“We at Colnago are all excited about the potential of a Giro d’Italia in Washington, DC and felt Diligent Rocket’s custom bike design definitely echoed our own aspirations towards elegant simplicity. We look forward to working with them again.”
